Co-op Directors Achieve Credentials in Electric Utility Competencies

May 20, 2024

WAVERLY, Va – Three directors from Prince George Electric Cooperative recently received the Credentialed Cooperative Director, Director Gold Credentials, and Board Leadership certificates from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

An ever-changing business environment has imposed new demands on electric cooperative directors, requiring increased knowledge of the cooperative principles and business model.  Prince George Electric Cooperative is committed to working with NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit our of membership.

The following directors achieved certifications in their respective areas:

Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate

Directors Brian Coey (District 1 – Bland) and James Corl (District 5 – Waverly-Wakefield-Newville) received the Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate.  The NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director program requires attendance and demonstrated understanding of the basic competencies contained in five core courses:

  • Directors Duties and Liabilities

  • Understanding the Electric Business

  • Board Operations and Process

  • Strategic Planning

  • Financial Decision Making

Board Leadership Certificate and Director Gold Credential Certificate

Vice-Chairman and director, Keith Dunn (District 6 – Stony Creek-Sussex Courthouse) received the Board Leadership Certificate and Director Gold Credential Certificate.

The NRECA Board Leadership Certificate recognizes individuals who continue their professional development after becoming a Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD). Directors who have attained the BLC have completed 10 credits in advanced, issues-oriented courses.

Director Gold Credential recognizes directors who have already earned their Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) and Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) and who wish to continue to learn throughout their service on the board.

"The Director Gold certificate is geared toward directors who are committed to continuing their education beyond CCD and BLC and who desire a tangible credential that reinforces their stature as part of an experienced and educated group of directors," said Sarat Yellepeddi, President and CEO. "Director Gold also demonstrates to co-op members those directors' ongoing commitment to advancing their knowledge and performing their fiduciary duty to the best of their ability.”

For a director to earn the Director Gold certificate, they must have already earned the CCD and BLC and earn three additional credits from the BLC series of courses. Unlike the CCD and BLC certificates, Director Gold includes a continuing education requirement which calls for directors to earn three credits of approved course work and/or conferences every two years to maintain their Director Gold status.
