Tip of the Month: Turn your suds into savings

1 abr 2025

Do you feel that you’re starting a new load of laundry each week? You’re not alone. Believe it or not, the average household washes around 300 loads of laundry per year. Unfortunately, this often shows up on your electric bill. The good news: Prince George Electric Cooperative wants to offer ways to find opportunities to turn laundry suds into savings.

Lower your energy usage in the laundry room with these simple tips:

  • Wash clothes with cold water whenever possible, as heating water accounts for most of the energy used in a laundry cycle.

  • Wash full loads to make the most of energy savings.

  • Use high-efficiency detergent designed for cold washes. According to the American Cleaning Institute (PDF), HE detergents are low-sudsing and quick-dispersing to clean well in high-efficiency washers that use less water.

  • For drying cycles, periodically, use the long nozzle tip on your vacuum cleaner to remove the lint that collects below the lint screen in the lint screen slot of your clothes dryer.  Cleaning the lint filter before each load to improve airflow and use dryer balls to reduce drying time.

  • Check the dryer vent for blockages.

  • Dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from lighter-weight clothes.

  • Use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the heat remaining in the dryer.

  • Consider air-drying clothes on clothes lines or drying racks. Air drying is recommended by clothing manufacturers for some fabrics.
